The Central Department of political science (CDPS), located in Kirtipur, Kathmandu within the premises of Central Campus of Tribhuvan University is one of the OLDEST and major departments under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Tribhuvan University (TU), the oldest and the largest university of Nepal. Established in 1960, under the TU Act, 1959, TU has been conducting degree programs in many subjects including in political science. Since its establishment, the CDPS has taught a number of students and has produced a large number of scholars, leaders and policymakers, including key executive authorities so far.

In spite the limited resources and challenges, the department has been providing quality education in political science discipline and is trying to produce globally saleable and competent manpower within the nation. The faculty members are equally competent in teaching and conducting academic research nationally and internationally.

Besides running Master degree in political science, the department is also planning to conduct Master degree in international relations (IR) from next year and making necessary preparations for that.

The department is an effective instrument in conducting research in assisting the Dean's Office in this regard in the various areas of political science discipline and so far has produced many PhDs in the discipline. The master degree programs in political science are so far conducted in eight places of Nepal, with political science as optional subjects in most all the government and public colleges within TU. The CDPS is also planning in near future to diversify further academic programs to meet the needs of the time and situation in the present globalized context.

The CDPS would like to welcome all stakeholders in making its academic effort a grand success and expect their support in its uplift and making the teaching – learning situation more scientific.
